Breakfast Club Hosts provide a light breakfast for young people, spend time with them, help them clean up, and shepherd them to the Sanctuary in time for worship. We started the Breakfast Club to nurture intergenerational connections at Parkway.
The Breakfast Club officially starts at 9 a.m. Consider arriving a few minutes early to set up and be there to welcome people. A couple of our young people have been showing up even earlier than that on a fairly regular basis. Expect anywhere from two to ten participants, some of whom arrive closer to worship. Consider wearing a name tag, which are available in a basket on my desk.
We usually have some leftover cereal or milk on hand at Parkway from previous weeks. Check in with David sometime the week before you host to find out what is available and what you will need to bring. If you would like to be reimbursed for any food that you purchase, please submit receipts to Charlene in the office. Cereal and yogurt go over well, and fruit is a healthy addition to consider.
Feel free to spend your time with the young people however is most comfortable for you. There are Children's Worship Bulletins on the table in the Narthex every week; these include word and number puzzles designed for ages 7-12 that are related to the scripture lesson for the day. I also have board games (Connect Four, Trouble, Guess Who?, UNO, Jenga, Sorry!, Apples to Apples, Whoonu, Phase 10, Mancala, Checkers, and Chess) on the top shelves in my office. Help yourself, but make sure to bring them back! There are plenty of storybooks in the closet and on the bookshelf of the children's library (third door on the left upstairs). Be sure to pick something out ahead of time if you want to go this route. If you have other ideas or want to bring something from home, feel free to do that. Keep in mind that it is difficult to anticipate how many people will be participating and there can be quite an age range.
Encourage young people to stay on the main level of the building before worship (i.e. the Narthex or the Fellowship Hall). Keep in mind, however, that I have heard from several older members in the congregation who are nervous when kids are not walking, particularly in the main hallway. They are worried about being bumped and falling. If you see a young person running, be sure to thank them for walking. If you notice someone who is running consistently, let me know so that I can follow up with them. Finally, when worship starts, feel free to invite a young person to sit with you, especially those who are not here with their families.
Thank you for supporting this emerging ministry and for your continued support of children and youth at Parkway. I have received much positive feedback about the Breakfast Club already and could not do it without volunteers like you!
Blessings,
